Light Tower Safety Maintenance Tips

Light Tower Safety Maintenance Tips

Light Tower maintenance is similar to maintaining any machine with a diesel engine. Preventive maintenance is the surest way to protect uptime. After all, if you're working overnight, deadlines can be tight. Now is not a good time to let a Light Tower go down. There are two easy ways to get your fleet of light towers ready to run: follow a maintenance schedule and use OEM parts.

Summer Operating Tips for Light Towers

Light Towers are often used at night as they provide shelter from the hottest temperatures of summer. However, they can overheat like any engine, and a few basic tips can help prevent this from happening. Position the tower so that air can flow freely through the vents. If you operate it against or near an object, that object may disturb the airflow. Check the engine coolant level and make sure it is filled according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check the radiator at least once a month and blow out any debris in the opposite direction of normal airflow.

Safely Transport and Install Light Towers

Lower and lock all items into place for transport following the instructions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. There is a lot to do between pulling the Light Tower to the job site and launching it. The user needs to level the light tower and set the outriggers correctly. Then, make sure the light is positioned and adjusted to the desired position before raising the mast. Once the tower is installed and the mast raised, make sure all switches are off before starting the engine. Operators should always refer to the manufacturer's starting instructions; once the engine is up and running, it is best to let the engine run for a few minutes before applying a load.

LED and Halogen Maintenance

The main difference between LED and halogen maintenance is that LED lights generally need to be replaced less frequently. LED lights are more durable, less prone to breakage, and don't lose brightness over time like halogen lights do. Metal halide lamps tend to burn at higher temperatures, so proper handling techniques - clean storage and safe handling - must be observed. LED lighting elements are easier to work with because they don't heat up; however, LED bulbs are not replaceable, so the entire element needs to be replaced. Because of the increased fuel efficiency associated with using LED lights—plus reduced bulb maintenance—the higher cost of LED lights is typically paid for within six months.

Light Tower Maintenance Checklist

The machine must be completely shut down and allowed time to cool completely before performing any maintenance. Check the Operations and Maintenance Manual for your machine's schedule, including exact maintenance service times.
