Floodlights are lighting fixtures on top of a moving lighthouse. Floodlights usually consist of several large bulbs that emit a strong beam of light outward. The type of lighting technology used in the bulb is different for each type of floodlight. Popular technologies include LED lighting, compact fluorescent (CFL), and halogen lighting. For a variety of reasons, the better choice today is LED lights.
LED technology is more efficient at converting electrical energy into light energy, which means that most of the electrical energy is emitted in the form of light rather than heat. Compared with halogen or CFL bulbs, LED bulbs also consume less energy. In this way, consumers can save electricity or use energy for other purposes. On a larger scale, this also means the sustainable use of natural resources. Although the bulb can be designed to emit light in a large space, the LED light is also bright and focused. They have a longer life than other bulbs, so they do not need to be replaced often. This makes it a good choice for floodlights.
Importantly, LED bulbs do not need to take some time to warm up before they light up. CFL bulbs do the opposite, which takes a few seconds to light. On a portable lighthouse, an LED light would be better because it lights up immediately, which means that activities are not obstructed or delayed, and glow instantly when needed. All these benefits make LEDs very popular in lighthouses.
Many floodlights are fitted with a ring that holds all the bulbs. This is done mainly for easy removal when replacing the lamp. When they are on a ring, remove them immediately and make all necessary replacements before putting the ring back. The circular design also means that light is emitted in one direction. Sometimes, for example, in a football stadium, light is required in only one direction. In this case, the bulbs are arranged on one side of the rectangular frame and placed as needed.
